What We Do
WHAT WE DO
We produce live and online events that combine performances of sacred concert music with discussion and fellowship.
Neither worship services nor “just” concerts, DEM events are opportunities for learning and spiritual formation that use music as the primary point-of-departure for study and conversation. These events may feature new music (our Composers Project) or music from a broader range of time-periods (Deus Ex Musica Ensemble.)
Since 2019, we have premiered over 40 new vocal and instrumental works in contexts intended to promote discussion about Scripture and faith.
We support the creation of new sacred concert music and promote its use as a resource for learning and spiritual growth.
Deus Ex Musica Records provides opportunities for composers to share their music in ways that support its use in the church outside of the worship service. Our most recent album, Search Me, O God, featured world-premiere recordings of ten psalm-inspired violin works by contemporary Christian and Jewish composers. The album was recently featured on “Sounds From the Spires”, program from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, on The Catholic Channel from SirusXM Radio.
The Deus Ex Musica Ensemble, based in Boston, USA, presents live performances of sacred concert music integrated with discussion and fellowship
We provide forums for exploring the rich interactions between music, theology, and the Bible.
Our blog explores the rich interactions between music, theology, and the Christian life, written by a wide variety of musicians, clergy, and scholars.
Our podcast and video series feature interviews with individuals who are exploring the intersections between faith and music from all genres, ranging classical to hip-hop to gospel.
We create resources to support clergy, musicians, teachers, scholars, and laypeople who want to learn more about the ways sacred music can contribute to faith formation.
In 2023, Deus Ex Musica will release its online Musical Bible Study resource, a flexible curriculum featuring listening guides and study questions that will help churches and individuals bring sacred music into their devotional, education and discipleship practices.
